To Build a Capsule Wardrobe You Actually Wear

Finding my personal style took years and practice when it comes to shopping. I learned that the best outfits come from a combination of items and accessories, and not one main showstopper piece of clothing. I used to shop based on the current trends, colors, and patterns. Now I shop and always ask myself, "Will I Still Wear This In a Year?" Although trends are fun, they sadly do not last and oftentimes have a quick turnaround within the fashion industry. Timeless is the goal within a great wardrobe.

1) My best rule is if I can't wear it three different ways, then it is not worth purchasing.

2) 70% basic pieces that can be worn with everything, 30% the showstopper pieces that show your personality and make you feel confident.

4) Always avoid fads (a fashion trend that is quickly popularized but disappears fast).

3) Focus on the accessories in your closet and less on the base pieces. These are the pieces that will help your wardrobe stand out and most likely will withstand the test of time.

I learned that thrifting was a great source for me to practice using my imagination for how I can style things multiple ways. My mother taught me that you should never buy anything that you don't 100% love. For example, you may love the top, but it's a slightly awkward length. That slight doubt that is now in your head will prevent you from grabbing it in your closet or making you feel confident while wearing it. Therefore, it is not worth the purchase and will not last long in your closet or be useful. Capsule wardrobes are the solution to overconsumption while helping you find your best personal style and authentic self.
